Part 4 / 4
This blog is the final part of a four part series that looks back on the lecture Children 1st Mediation gave in the Family Mediation Council’s Family Mediation Week 2025. The lecture focus was on the importance of Child Inclusive Mediation, and the benefits it can bring to families going through separation. In this final part, we explore the positive impact of child Inclusive Mediation, led by our research and feedback from children having gone through it.
Research Findings: What Have Children Said After Child Inclusive Mediation?
We know that separation and divorce can be a confusing and upsetting time for children. At Children 1st Mediation, we believe in giving children a voice during this difficult process. Child Inclusive Mediation (CIM) offers a safe space for children to share their thoughts and feelings with a trained mediator, who then helps parents better understand their children’s perspectives. But what do children actually say about their experience with Child Inclusive Mediation? Let’s take a look at some key research findings from our research and the feedback children give after this process:
- Improved Parent-Child Relationships: Children often report feeling closer to their parents after participating in Child Inclusive Mediation. They appreciate having the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings openly and honestly. This can lead to better communication and stronger relationships within the family.
- More Informed and Balanced Parenting Decisions: When parents understand their children’s perspectives, they can make more informed decisions about parenting arrangements. Child Inclusive Mediation helps parents see things from their children’s point of view, leading to more balanced and child-centred choices.
- Reduced Conflict Between Parents: Child Inclusive Mediation can help reduce conflict between parents by improving communication and understanding. When parents work together to meet their children’s needs, with the support of a family mediator, it can create a more cooperative and peaceful environment for everyone.
- Greater Emotional Resilience in Children: Children who participate in Child Inclusive Mediation often report feeling more emotionally resilient. They learn that their feelings are valid and that they have a voice in matters that affect them. This can help them cope better with the challenges of separation and divorce.
